There are few of these Pioneer thru-hiker journals on the web today. Fortunately Earl Shaffer's journals are accessible and are here to represent the first known and accepted thru-hike of the Appalachian Trail in either a Northbound or Southbound hike. A two volume book published in 1972 contained a large number of early journals and if you are lucky, you may find this set in an old book store or at your local library.
